Josh and his can |
If you look at the page of this site entitled 'Aims' you will see a series of photos of little puppy Josh joyfully romping with a Coke can (this particular can he found at our caravan park during our visit to Victoria for the 07 Aussie Specialty). I knew that the puppies In Josh's litter had been given plastic soft drink bottles to play with when they were little, as part of their socialisation to different sounds and textures, and it seems that this must have been a particularly enjoyable pastime for Josh, one that he has every intention of continuing! Our current story begins when my partner Chris stacked some aluminium cans on a shelf in the backyard. These cans remained neatly stacked for some months, until one day a curious puppy stumbled across them. I myself was inside at the time, but eventually became aware of a very strange, metallic crackling sound, and went to the window to investigate. This is what I saw: |

Of course, in reality things were actually a lot more 'energetic' when I first looked out the window. At that point, I saw a black tri puppy making laps of the yard at full speed - laps that included the pond and every possible patch of dirt - all the while gleefully crackling a can between his teeth. Because the can was rapidly developing sharp edges, I had to step in and remove it, which Josh didn't seem to mind TOO much, having pretty much destroyed it beyond it's noise-making potential anyway! |
Josh's first try at Herding |
On 30/03/08 Josh had his first chance to do some herding, at a training day with ducks run by the SACA Herding Advisory Committee. I had been very much looking forward to this chance to try a dog sport that was entirely new to me, and I thought it was something Josh could do well at. Well, he certainly didn't disappoint. After a few initial bounces at the ducks, he settled down and showed a lot of natural instinct in moving them about the pen. When the group split in two, he knew he needed to get them all together again, and he liked to get to their front and 'head' them. He quickly learnt that a slow, steady pace and a bit of distance worked best. I was very proud of him, and look forward to our next herding experience. |
(My partner Chris was kind enough to take these photos for me). |
